DIVINE RIGHT: CHAPTER XV | Questions // The Jewel of the BayThe flowers were finally beginning to bloom. Sitting on the veranda looking out over the gardens, spring was singing to them. The winter hadn’t been difficult, it hardly ever was, but just the same, to see the color burst back into the landscape. The trees were suddenly drenched in that florescent green that only comes in the early days of the season, it gave them all a vibrancy to match the landscape.
He ran a finger down the side of his glass, dragging the traces of humidity away in a clean line. The pink drink, filled with ice and a few sprigs of mint, sparkled against the clear, young light. He shut his eyes underneath his sunglasses, sealing away the brilliance of the apple blossoms, the magnolias, the rhododendron, instead focusing on everything else: the easy warmth of sun against his cheeks and shoulders, the smell of lilac and young grass, the feel of the cool drink against his fingers. Sometimes he wished it could always be spring. Beginnings were simpler than middles, and maybe endings were easier than either. In the spring there was nothing but promise, promise and relief. The darkness was gone, and the open arms of summer were waiting just beyond tomorrow. There was a hope there, a sigh in the earth, he was sure couldn’t be found much of anywhere else.
